Drug-related treatment: Introduction

Treatment coverage remains low globally, with strong regional and drug-specific differences.

  • Only a small proportion of people with drug use disorders receive treatment, with coverage highest in Europe and lowest in Africa and Asia. Across all regions, the estimated treatment coverage is lower for women than for men with drug use disorders.
  • The primary drug driving treatment demand varies by region: opioids play the largest role in Europe and second largest in Africa, while amphetamine-type stimulants play the largest role in Asia and Oceania (Australia and New Zealand). Cannabis is the most common drug of use among people in treatment in Africa and the second most common drug in Oceania.).
