Drug treatment services and prevention of infectious diseases

Global availability, coverage and accessibility of drug-related treatment varies across intervention types.

  • Not all types of pharmacological treatment, psychosocial interventions and rehabilitation and aftercare are available in all countries. Opioid agonist maintenance therapy and opioid antagonist maintenance treatment are only available in 72 and 62 per cent of reporting countries, respectively.
  • Among psychosocial and behavioural interventions, contingency management is among the less available (in 76 per cent of reporting countries).
  • Recovery and social reintegration are only adequately covered in less than half of the reporting countries.
  • The coverage of interventions for the prevention of infectious diseases varies slightly by type of intervention, based on data from 56 countries, and tends to be higher for HIV testing. On the other hand, across the four types of intervention, the highest number of countries reporting low coverage was for opioid substitution therapy.
