The use of “ecstasy” remains highest in high income countries and parts of Asia.
- Global prevalence of "ecstasy" use in the past year is estimated at 0.4% of the general population aged 15-64 years with higher values among males (0.54%) than among females (0.26%) although the difference is not as pronounced as in the case of other drugs (for example opiates).
- Based on the limited data, the largest consumer markets for "ecstasy"-type substances continue to be East and South-East Asia, and Western and Central Europe, while the highest prevalence of use can be found in Australia and New Zealand.
- Wastewater analysis suggests that the use of "ecstasy"-type substances in South-Eastern Europe could be higher than that reflected in population survey data.
