Trends in cannabis-related harm in selected subregions of Europe

  • Between 2000 and 2020, cannabis in Western and Central Europe and parts of South-Eastern Europe became more potent, more affordable and more frequently used in a number of countries, although these trends have stabilized in recent years.
  • Despite this stabilization, the number of cannabis-related treatment patients increased again in 2024, based on preliminary data.
  • Cannabis use patterns and related harms differ between women and men. More than 80 per cent of people in drug-related treatment with cannabis as their primary drug are men, with proportions ranging from about 70 per cent in Denmark to 100 per cent in Albania. The highest shares of men in drug-related treatment for cannabis are observed in Eastern and South-Eastern Europe
