Heroin and morphine seizures remain concentrated in Asia.
In line with the concentration of opium production in Asia, almost two thirds (64 per cent) of global heroin and morphine seizures occurred in Asia in 2024, notably in South-Western Asia and, to a lesser extent, in East and South-East Asia.
In 2024, the Islamic Republic of Iran – bordering Afghanistan – reported the largest seizures of opium, morphine and heroin. The next largest heroin seizures were reported by Pakistan, Egypt and Türkiye, largely linked to (possibly stockpiled) opiates produced in Afghanistan.
Heroin and morphine seizures declined strongly in the Near and Middle East, South-West Asia and Europe in line with substantially reduced Afghan opium production, while increasing in East and South-East Asia.
